Gaba's Philosophy

Teaching in Japan One-to-one Lessons

Gaba was established to challenge the way that English was being taught in Japan. Prior to Gaba's formation, group classes and a “one size fits all” approach were the norm among English “chain” schools in Japan. We believe that people are unique learners: they learn languages for different reasons, have different interests, and move at different paces. Gaba's one-to-one system was created in response to our Clients' needs for personalized attention. This approach maximizes Clients' learning potential, making it that much easier for them to achieve their goals. Based on this commitment to customization, Gaba has been able to corner a unique segment of the English language market and steadily expand. Since 1995, we have established more than 30 Learning Studios.

Studio Environment

Shibuya Leaning Studio

Located in some of Japan's most fashionable and central urban locations, and designed to provide a relaxing environment where Clients can come to unwind, Gaba's Learning Studios provide the perfect atmosphere for Clients to learn how to speak naturally. Each Learning Studio consists of individual booths equipped with everything that is needed to conduct a lesson: a laptop computer with internet access, learning materials, and lesson paper. Our professional environment reflects the fact that our Clients are primarily adults who are often learning English as a tool to help them advance their careers and compete on the global stage. We also offer children's lessons through our Gaba kids program from select studios. Aged 6 to 12, lessons are taught one-to-one just like the adults but with our children's specific material.

Gaba has 30 Learning Studios in and around Tokyo, as well as schools in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nagoya. Each is unique in look and atmosphere. Here are descriptions of but a few:

Shinjuku:

One of the major business, shopping and entertainment capitals of the city, Shinjuku is home to one of our largest Learning Studios. With a diverse client and instructor base, there is something for everyone here. The Gaba studio is located on the East side of the station, a 5 minute walk from one of Tokyo's largest parks.
Tokyo:

The area surrounding Tokyo Station is home to the headquarters of some of Japan's largest companies - especially financial firms. As is the case, the Tokyo Learning Studio caters mostly to business clientele. It is also within walking distance of the Imperial Palace and Ginza, the most upscale of Japan's many fashion districts.
Yokohama:

Only 30 minute south of Tokyo and located on Tokyo Bay, Yokohama is proud of it's past. With battleships, a huge Ferris wheel and one of the world's largest Chinatowns, Yokohama has entertainment as well as convenience. The Gaba Learning Studio is located only 5 minutes from the station, and is know for its family-like atmosphere.
Umeda:

Gaba's largest studio in Osaka. With clients coming from all over the northern half of the city, it caters to business professionals as well as students and English hobbyists alike. Perched on the 10th floor of a gorgeous glass and steel high-rise, it is a nice place to teach!
Sakae:

With just one Learning Studio in Nagoya, there is a sort of pioneering spirit here. Everyone from the staff and instructors to the clients is determined to succeed. Atop a ritzy shopping center in Nagoya's primary shopping district, it is perhaps the coziest studio despite its relative size!
